Iranian denial

Ok... I know it seems very weired, but do you remember one of the first posts on this blog? Yes, it's right! It was about Iran and its peculiar way of eliminating homosexuals. This is weired because the President of Iran, as you must be aware, was in USA. He was invited by University of Columbia and said something extraordinary... Take a look.

So, people laughed... I didn't. Certainly he is right because he might have killed everybody who was gay in Iran. That man, who is obviously a villager who raised power for being fanatic islamist, makes me remember some spokeman of Saddam Hussein. Do you remember that funny guy telling about the fantastic power of Irak and the fantastic victory against America? He was always denying Irak's defeat. Mr. Ahmadinejad is an evil man. But what makes him diabolic is his truly ability of create a world and a country that doesn't exist. He denies the existence of homosexuals in Iran with the same horrible smile he uses when he denies the Holocaust, with the same sarcasm he wears in his lips when he denies a dictatureship in that country... He is a dissimulation. He could at least admit he his a dictature who doesn't like jews, gays, americans, and everything who his not according to the Qu'ran. This way of facing the world is oldfashioned. But specially, this way of facing the world makes me believe world is, despite of everything, becaming a worst place.

In the memory of those men and women who were killed in the Islamic Republic of Iran for not being heterosexuals.

Queer Lisboa 11

It's today the openning session of the Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Since its foundation, in 1997, the Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (LGLFF) has always conceived itself as an artistic and cultural event, open to everybody, far from any sense of ghetto, to where frequently events of this nature are thrown into. In a Gay and Lesbian Film Festival the compromise must be sealed, not only with its theme, but also with Film, given that this festival is made for cinema lovers, be them gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or not. The Festival program is conceived for all, regardless of identities or lifestyles.

Football

It might be strange but there are better things than just soccers legs to see in a stadium. Going to football is no more a straight and viril activity. Women and gays already conquered stadium as well... and, as you can see in the pictures below, there are not just guys running with a ball but also working for TV stations. This happened by chance: my sit was one of the best and I was just in front of this overmuscled cameraman. The score was 2-2. Who cares?

Iowa's Gay Marriage Ban Overturned

Good news for North-american gays living in Iowa. Article from Associated Press.

A Polk County judge on Thursday struck down Iowa's law banning gay marriage.
The ruling by Judge Robert Hanson concluded that the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and he ordered the Polk County recorder to issue marriage licenses to six gay couples.
"This is kind of the American Dream," said plaintiff Jen BarbouRoske, of Iowa City. "I'm still feeling kind of shaky. It's pure elation, I just cannot believe it."
Camilla Taylor, an attorney with Lambda Legal, a New York-based gay rights organization, said the ruling requires "full equality for all Iowans including gay and lesbian Iowans and their families."
"The Iowa Constitution has lived up to its promises of equality for everyone," she said.
Gay couples from anywhere in Iowa could apply for a marriage license from Polk County. The process takes three days, however.
Polk County is expected to appeal the ruling to the Iowa S upreme Court.
County Attorney John Sarcone said the county would immediately seek a stay from Hanson, which if granted would prevent anyone from seeking a marriage license until an appeal could be heard.
The case will be appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court, which could refer it to the Iowa Court of Appeals, consider the case itself or decide not to hear the case.
Des Moines lawyer Dennis Johnson represented the six gay couples who filed suit after they were denied marriage licenses. He called the ruling "a moral victory for equal rights."
Johnson argued that Iowa has a long history of aggressively protecting civil rights in cases of race and gender. He said the Defense of Marriage Act, which the Legislature passed in 1998, contradicts previous court rulings regarding civil rights and should be struck down.
Johnson called the Defense of Marriage law "mean spirited" and said it was designed only to prohibit gays from marrying. He said it violates t he state constitution's equal protection and due-process clauses.
Lambda Legal, which spearheaded a same-sex marriage drive across the country, filed the lawsuit on behalf of the gay and lesbian couples in Polk County District Court on Dec. 13, 2005.
Roger J. Kuhle, an assistant Polk County attorney, argued that the issue is not for a judge to decide.
Rachel Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the conservative Iowa Family Policy Center, which opposes gay marriage, said the decision will be appealed.
"We're very disappointed and will pursue to the next level of courts," she said.
In his ruling, Hanson said the state law allowing marriage only between a man and a woman violates the constitutional rights of due process and equal protection.
"Couples, such as plaintiffs, who are otherwise qualified to marry one another may not be denied licenses to marry or certificates of marriage or in any other way prevented from entering into a civil marriage... by reason of the fact that both person comprising such a couple are of the same sex," he said.
The judge said the state law banning same-sex marriage must be nullified, severed and stricken from the books and the marriage laws "must be read and applied in a gender neutral manner so as to permit same-sex couples to enter into a civil marriage..."
State Sen. Ron Wieck, R-Sioux City, said he was surprised by the ruling and promised the Legislature would take another look at the issue.
"We'll look at something we can do legislatively," Wieck said.
House Minority Leader Christopher Rants, R-Sioux City, said the judge's ruling only illustrates the need for a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
"I can't believe this is happening in Iowa," he said. "I guarantee you there will a vote on this issue come January."
Sarcone, the Polk County attorney, said the arguments in the case were similar to those made in litigation around the cou ntry.
"I know Judge Hanson took a lot of time with it," Sarcone said. "He made his decision and we respectfully disagree."
Kate Varnum, another plaintiff, said she was elated but expected more legal battles.
"I don't expect this to be the last one," said Varnum, of Cedar Rapids.

«Ethnic cleaning» in Treviso

I'm back from vacation, but homophobia doesn't take any vacation.

The vice-mayor of Treviso, north of Italy, found the perfect way of fighting the male prostitution at the city: an «ethnic cleaning of faggots». Giancarlo Gentilli, from the North League (federalist and conservative party), made this proposal in order to finish with the male prostitution in some parking of the town's hospital. According to Mr. Gentilli «faggots should go to other capitals in the countryside that are able to host them». «In Teviso there are no possibilities to faggots or similars», he said.
Fortunatelly there are still wise people in Italy and political parties from all tendencies, ministers and associations criticized Mr. Gentilli words, who told in a local radio he would order the Local Police to «start the cleaning».
The italian minister of Family, Rosy Bindi, classified Mr. Gentilli words as «uncivilized» and underligned that«ethnic cleaning» was responsible for «tragedies in the History that caused suffering to millions of people».
The Homosexual Culture Circle Mario Mely and the Association Acigay had also reacted, having announced they would ask the intervention of the Minister of Interior, Giuliano Amato, «against a local administration who promotes violence».
The former minister Roberto Calderoni, also from the North League, denied his support: «Talking about ethnic cleaning of faggots no! Sorry, but I do not agree».

Ufff!!! I thought he wanted also to build concentration camps...

Europride 2007

As I've written yesterday, June 30 was the day of the Europride 2007, this year hosted by Madrid Pride. Let's translate here what the main Spanish paper wrote and put some links.

Rights with Pride
(Antonio Navia / 20 minutos)

El Pais, 30.Jun.2007

The massive March Europride 2007 converted this saturday the streets in the heart of Madrid in a party to celebrate the achivements in social and legal acknowledgment of homosexual, bisexual and transgender people, but also to show how much has still to be done for equality. The Lesbian Federation, Gays, Transgenders and Bisexuals (FELGT) and the Association of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and TRansgenders of Madrid (COGAM) claim more than one million and half participants in the demonstration.
The demonstration, that toke place between Puerta de Alcalá and Plaza de España, had on head the slogan: Now Europe! Equality is possible, written in Spanish, in English and in other languages. The entire itinerary was crowded as well as the closest streets.
On the head of the demonstration were: the Spanish Minister of Culture, Carmen Calvo; the leader of IU (United Left), Gaspar Llamazares; leaders of UGT and CC OO, Cándido Méndez and José Maria Fidalgo; the secretary of Social Movements of PSOE [the Socialist Party in the government], Pedro Zerolo; and the speaker of IU in Madrid Assembly, Inés Sabanés. Leaders of FELGTB, Antonio Poveda, and COGAM, Miriam Navas, were also in the head of the march.

A lot to be done
March began around 6pm with firecrackers and the anthem of the gay colectivity, the famous song ¿A quién le importa? [Who cares?] performed by Alaska, that was also listened in the middle of the way, in Plaza del Callao, and at the end in Plaza de España. The Minister of Cultures and the secretary of Social Movements of PSOE sang and danced listening to this song, being dressed with glasses and necklaces with flowers and the colours of the rainbow, symbol of gays.
In the statement, read by representatives of lesbians, gays, transgenders and bisexuals at Plaza de España, it was reminded that, since the first Pride, 30 years ago in Barcelona, it was demanded a "social and legal acknowledgment" which then seemed "lamost impossible", but "there is still a lot to be done" against discrimination and homophobia.
Laws such the marriage or the one that allows the change of name and sex without surgery intervention, have assumed the acknowledgment of dignity to "homosexuals, trangenders and bisexuals", the text says. However, there are a lot of social and legal claimings to achieve, like the inclusion in the National Health System of all the process of sex change in all the provinces, as it was done in Andalucía, Extremadura, Aragón, Asturias, Cataluña and Madrid.

"Citizenship to educate clergy"
During the demonstration, among the flags of different countries, placards with slogans were exhibited: No to the resource of PP [the Conservative Party] to the marriage. Citizen Pride! , Thirty years of democracy and two of equality. Are they going to kick us?, Latin America goes ahead, To bane homofobia from the educative centers, Families do care. Those of gays and lesbians too, Freedom, equality, laicism and Citizenship to educate clergy.
At the end of the march, more than 40 floats came slowly, with hundreds of people adorned with suits and disguises dancing disco music. After the speeches, having Plaza de España as stage, they carried on the celebration with the performances of Dios y Malizzia, Hanna, Marta Sánchez, Innocence, Locomía, Harem and La Terremoto de Alcorcón.

Gay Pride

We are just on Gay Pride season. Lots of cities (including mine) had already been the place of gay parades and parties as well as other events that are tools to fight against discrimination and prejudice. I will post below a calendar with some of the Gay Prides that will take place soon. Later I will write more about some specific marchs.
Just an advise for those who are in Madrid this weekend: Madrid Pride is hosting this year the Europride. They are expecting around 2 million people in the march between Puerta de Alcalá and Plaza de España, passing in Gran Vía.
Europride is an international lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and asexual gay pride event that is hosted by a different European city each year. The host city is usually one with an established gay pride event, or one which has a significant LGBTA community. This year the host is Madrid and in 2008 it will be Stockholm hosting the Europride. Since 1992 Europride has taken place all over Europe.

"I do" for gay marriage in NYC

First of all SORRY, SORRY, SORRY!!! I really have to apologize for not having posted for so long, but I've been busy and had no time till today.
As the lack of time is an universal problem, let's go to the point and I will quote an article, wich is much better than I could ever write. The article is from Times Union (author: Rick Karlin) and tells us about the votation in New York assembly about gay marriage.
Let's not forget that gay marriage is just legal in Massachusetts. Other states as California, Vermont and New Jersey have legalized the civil union between people of the same sex.

After more than three hours of impassioned debate, the Assembly on Tuesday night approved a bill to allow same-sex marriage in New York.

Assemblyman David O'Donnell, D-Manhattan, sponsor of the same-sex marriage bill, speaks Tuesday before the bill's passage in the Assembly.
(Philip Kamrass / Times Union)

Even though the bill is not slated for discussion in the Senate, proponents said the Assembly action was an important first step if New York is ever to legalize such marriages.
"I'm very proud of my colleagues," said a buoyant Daniel O'Donnell, D-Manhattan, an openly gay lawmaker who carried the bill on behalf of Gov. Eliot Spitzer. The bill passed 85-61, more than he'd expected.
"This was one of those nights where the debate changed votes," said Assemblyman Ronald Canestrari, D-Cohoes. "It doesn't happen that often."
The debate included testimonials by lawmakers who are gay or who have homosexual children or other relatives. Some called gay marriage the civil rights issue of its time.
"Why are we doing this now? The answer is very simple. I believe this is the most important human rights issue facing this legislature," said Richard Gottfried, D-New York.
Tuesday's vote marked the first time same sex marriage has been debated in the Legislature.
Only one state, Massachusetts, recognizes same sex marriages.
While Democrats, who control 107 seats in the 150-seat Assembly were in the majority of those voting yes, some Republicans joined in as well.
And opinions on the issue crossed not only party lines but racial and religious lines, with lawmakers who were black and white, Catholic and Jewish, voting on both sides.
Ultimately, though, supporters said they saw no reason that gay and lesbian New Yorkers shouldn't enjoy the same legal privileges and protections, and chance for happiness, as heterosexuals.
"It is not a life choice, it is not something someone can change," said Teresa Sayward, R-Elizabethown, who has a gay son.
"I went through a great deal of my early life knowing who I was and knowing that there was no place for me," said Deborah Glick, D-New York, who is openly gay. "This is about being a full human being and having the respect and the protection, not just for oneself but for one's family."
Some opponents pointed to religious qualms on the issue.
"It's a direct challenge to the way I was brought up," said Brian Kolb, R-Canandaigua, who was raised in the Catholic faith. He added that residents in his district mostly oppose same sex marriage.
"It is about tradition," said Dov Hikind, D-Brooklyn, an Orthodox Jew who said his personal faith proscribes same sex marriage.
But Joel Miller, R-Poughkeepsie, who also is Jewish, said tradition and discriminatory religious beliefs should not guide legislative decisions, "There was a time when the world was flat," he said. "Sometimes you just have to move forward."
In the Capital Region, Canestrari and fellow Democrats Jack McEneny of Albany and Paul Tonko of Amsterdam voted for the measure, while Democrat Robert Reilly of Colonie, Republican Minority Leader James Tedisco of Schenectady and independent Tim Gordon of Bethlehem voted against it.The vote was a win for Spitzer, who last year was endorsee by Empire State Pride Agenda, a gay rights group that pushed hard for same-sex marriage.O'Donnell earlier said he had been assured by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, that the measure wouldn't be brought to the floor unless there enough votes for it to pass. The bill needed a minimum of 76 votes to pass. O'Donnell wanted at least 85 members backing the bill before it came up for debate.
"The worst thing is to have it on the floor and voted down," O'Donnell earlier told New York "City Hall" Web site. "The second worst thing is to have it voted up by just one vote. You don't want to be in that precarious situation."
The unofficial tally showed 81 Democrats and four Republicans voting for it, and 22 Democrats, 38 Republicans, and one independent voting against it.
For lawmakers in districts who don't have a large enrollment edge, the vote posed a dilemma, given polls showing most New Yorkers oppose same-sex marriage.
A Cornell University Empire State Poll recently found that 52 percent of respondents opposed the idea. And a Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey released Tuesday found just 35 percent of registered voters favored same-sex marriage.
Prior to Tuesday evening's vote, opponents including the Catholic Conference explained why they are against same-sex marriage.
"Recognizing same-sex unions will only serve to devalue marriage even more than what has already occurred in recent years," said the conference's memo opposing the bill.
O'Donnell, the brother of comedienne Rosie O'Donnell, stressed that nothing in the bill forces clerics to perform same-sex marriages.
States that already recognize civil unions or domestic partnerships for gay couples are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Washington, D.C.
Shortly after the vote, Matthew Titone, D-Staten Island, said that he received a call on his cell phone.
"I have my partner here on the phone and he just asked me to marry him, and my answer is 'yes,' " he said.

"Gays" Anatomy

This is not so new as that, but somehow I'm glad to announce the next season of the hit Grey's Anatomy will not have Isaiah Washington (photo below) on the cast. Reason: homophobic slurs against gay castmate T.R. Knight (photo in the top).

This is how it happened:

On Wednesday, October 11, 2006, People magazine reported that an on-set fight had erupted between Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey, stars of the hit show Grey’s Anatomy. The incident started when Washington became frustrated that some of his co-stars were late to work. Reportedly, Washington made an inappropriate comment to T.R. Knight, another actor on Grey’s Anatomy. Angered by Washington’s comment, Dempsey said, "Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?" The argument quickly became heated and Washington grabbed Dempsey by the throat and allegedly yelled, "I’m not your little faggot like T.R." According to sources, others on the set were shocked.
On Thursday, October 19, 2006,
People reported that Knight confirmed exclusively to them that he is gay. In his official statement, Knight told People:
"I guess there have been a few questions about my sexuality, and I'd like to quiet any unnecessary rumors that may be out there. While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me."

(from the final version of the petition “Fire Isaiah Washington”, found here)

Producers of ABC’s #1 show, Grey’s Anatomy, decided to replace the actor in the new season. I am glad for their decision. Homophobia is not the way!

Riga: celebrating rights, fighting prejudice

«Gay rights are Human rights»

We are in Gay Pride season, and this weekend it was Riga's turn. It is important to remind that Baltic states are highly homphobic and Riga's Gay Pride March was the first one to be allowed in a baltic state 2 years ago.
This year, as usual, members of groups on the far right in Latvia staged a noisy demonstration in front of the Parliament on Wednesday (May 30) demanding that lawmakers ban the gay pride parade. The groups included skinheads, extreme nationalists, neo-Nazis and churchgoers. Nothing so new... More than 100 protestors shouted homophobic slogans and handed out T-shirts to passersby bearing anti-gay messages.
However, this year - on Sunday June 3 - the march took place. Amnesty International members from all over Europe, some MEPs representing the European Parliament, the Swedish Minister for Migration Affairs and some other Danish and Norwigian politicians participated in Riga Pride 2007 in solidarity with the Latvian LGBT individuals, who are facing widespread hostility and discrimination. There were around 500 people in the march that was restrited to Riga city park due to secutiry reasons.
The events organized by Mozaika, a Latvian LGBT organization, started on 31 May and included speeches, workshops and parties, culminating with the march on Sunday 3 June. In the last two years Gay Pride parades organized by the GLBT group Mozaika exposed Latvian intolerance to homosexuality on the international arena.
Following two consecutive years of Riga Pride that have seen attacks on supporters of the march, the Latvian authorities protected the participants' safety and their right to freedom of assembly. These rights, as well as the right not to be discriminated against, must be respected not just on the day of the march but all year round.

Interview with Mozaika co-founder (Real Player)

Last years...
In 2006 the capital city of Riga refused to grant a parade permit citing security reasons following a recommendation from Latvian Interior Minister Dzintars Jaundzeikars.
Pride organizers organized a service at a local church instead of holding a parade. As they left the church dozens were attacked by an angry mob.
They were pelted with bags of excrement and verbal abuse as police stood by watching.
Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga denounced the violence and said that it was unacceptable for the Riga City Council to refuse the parade permit.
In 2005 gays went to court and got an injunction after the city also refused a parade license. The march was marked by violence and a number of protestors were arrested.
A labor law passed in 2004 as a condition of European Union membership and as required by the EU contained protections for gays was never implemented. Last year Parliament revised it stripped out the LGBT protections and sent it to the president for her signature.
After a heated battle in Parliament the clause was reinstated and the bill was signed into law.
